Not much text tonight, just lots of pictures. This set is from last night’s soccer game.

I told myself that I needed to get back to reading the core science fiction award-winning books, and I just finished a very satisfying Ender’s Game by Scott Orson Card. Humanity is on the brink of war with an insect-like species again, and the military is looking to young children to lead them to victory.
Don’t let the concept of intergalactic war with insects turn you off to this novel. It’s a blend of military psychology, politics, and sibling rivalry and love. In Card’s novel preface, he states that goal was to write a clear and accessible story, and he certainly did so with Ender’s Game. In fact, his novel is required reading in some military school around the world.
He published the novel in 1985, well before the advent of the Internet as we currently know it. However, he had a flash of brilliance by predicting that the world would have an international “net” to use for communication and discussion. He saw the social networking and information sharing that would come. The Internet actually existed back then, but was only known to academia and scientists. He took an existing tool, and made good use of it in the novel.
So, what’s next in my reading? Heather and I have jointly bought some Stephen King books in recent weeks, but I think I want to get in one more Hugo or Nebula winning science fiction novel. I have read nearly a quarter of the award-winning novels in each category, and it might be nice to pass that little milestone.
