Padre Pio

reading: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Before I get going, are you familiar with Snopes.com? This website houses a large collectoin of urban legends. If you have heard a rumor that is hard to believe, check it out on Snopes; you will probably find it debunked.

That being said, they have a section dedicated to religion. You won't find any sticky points of doctrine there, but the stories are amusing nonetheless.

Padre Pio's body goes on display - World Faith- msnbc.com

A poll in 2006 by Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana found that more Italian Catholics prayed to Padre Pio than to any other figure, including the Virgin Mary or Jesus.

For me, this is the maddening part of the function of the saints. I simply do not believe that we should be praying to anyone other than the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit. I don't know of anywhere in the Bible where it states anything about praying to the saints.

I do find the story of Padre Pio to be interesting, though. It is intriguing to think about the reality of the stigmata he had on his hands. I do believe that God performs miracles every single day. Perhaps they are not always that evident and obvious. I prefer to think of God’s subtle work in our lives. Sometimes we do not recognize His work for years after an incident.

Soccer Games and New Swings

reading: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Katelyn explodes into the ballTonight was Katelyn’s third soccer game of the season. She seems to be getting the hang of the concept of soccer, but Tuesday nights are simply harder for her. She gets tired after a long day at school. She’s very alert and on the ball on Saturday’s. Tuesday’s are a struggle after the half!

I have been able to film two of the games. I hope to be able to get a ton of stills that I can share on a regular basis, just like I did when Dylan was playing soccer. I just cannot do it tonihght!

We bought a new lawn swing tonight. The one we bought in 2004 has served us well, but three Springs, Summers, and Falls have taken their toll on it. It’s falling apart and is quite dirty. Heather and I agreed that we need to keep this new one in the garage when we are not using it. It should last three times as long. I'm not sure when I will be able to put it together, but perhaps I can have it done Saturday. We need to get yard work done first.

The kids love the trampoline! Pictures to come . . .

Sunday Bonfire

Today was the day we had our massive bonfire. Remember, this pile had been accumulating during all of 2007. It was large, dry, and ready to go. Yesterday’s rain did a lot to convince me that Sunday would be the day. I felt confident that it would be safe to burn.

Katelyn and I went to church, came home, and we had lunch. After that, it was lighting time! The fire took off very quickly, and the bulk of the brush was gone within about twenty minutes.

From there, I spent the next several hours keeping an eye on the larger sticks and branches that were burning and smoldering. I also found tons of other dead branches and small logs to throw on. I wore myself out, but it was fun, and well worth it. I find there to be relief in watching fire do its work.

My body is worn out. I’ll be sore on Monday, and probably worse on Tuesday. It’s well worth the effort, though. I really enjoy just putzing around in the yard and field.

I also finished putting together our trampoline. I did not have a chance to get any pictures of Katelyn "testing" it out, but there will be plenty to come, I assure you. I hope that Dylan will be able to enjoy it as well.

I took some pictures of the bonfire, but for some unknown reason, my camera was set on black and white. So, I obviously cannot show you the vibrant colors. However, there is some value in seeing flame in a grey world. The first picture is just before I lit it up. The rest tell the story from there.

Before the bonfire

Just thirty seconds after I lit it.

After a few minutes.

Close-up of the heart of the fire.

After about fifteen minutes.
