10/26/2007: "Bears Over Eagles, 31-21"
The St. Joseph Bears overcame incredible opponent speed, gutsy 4th down calls, two 4th down encroachment penalties, a heavy rainstorm and an hour lightning delay to defeat the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles 31-21 tonight. Randy and I were witnesses to an amazing game, with big plays when they counted the most.
The teams went into the locker rooms at halftime locked at 7 points apiece. St Joseph showed 3rd quarter dominance by scoring two impressive touchdowns in succession, and led 21-7 before the lightning delay began with about four minutes left in the quarter.
The Eagles showed why they are a playoff team by scoring late in the third quarter, and again in the fourth, setting up a 21-21 tie. St Joseph managed a morale-raising field goal with about 5 minutes left in the game. Grand Rapids was not able to mount much of a drive and punted the ball back with about three minutes left.
All the Bears needed to do was grind out the clock, but got a huge TD run of over 40 yards to put a huge nail in the Eagles’ coffin. A big TD when it mattered the most! Once the Eagles got the ball back, the QB was sacked on a huge 2nd down play, again demonstrating the Bears ability to bring on the big play when it had to matter the most.
The Eagles turned the ball over on downs, and the Bears easily ground out the rest of the clock! It was a very satisfying game. I have plenty of pictures to share once I have a chance to download them and look at them. There are no action pictures, because my camera just cannot handle it under that dim of light. However, there are still some fun things I brought from the game.
I won’t get to see St Joseph’s rematch with Lakeshore next Friday, but I will be listening on the radio.
