10/17/2007: "Of Soccer and Football and Trains"

listening to: FM 90.7 -- Andrews University -- Classical

I forgot to tell you that Katelyn scored another goal last night! She got to score one with Mommy looking this time. Katelyn finally figured out that if she was aggressive and went after the ball near the goal, she could get easy shots. After she scored, she started racing down the field to stand right in front of the goal every time thereafter, and we had to tell her to help her team take the ball down the field first.

So, she still has a lot to learn, but we will work with her during the winter for sure. Our church has a gym that is perfect for practicing soccer skills. We want her to be more prepared for the season this Spring than she was for this Fall. She likes playing, so we will encourage her.

----------

Dylan’s football team played Lakeshore again . . . and unfortunately suffered a similar fate again. They were drubbed by about thirty points. However, Dylan got to play more than usual. He was on the kickoff return team, and got to play in a few offensive plays in the first quarter. He then went on to play in 100% of the plays in the fifth quarter.

I did not videotape one single play because I was a part of the chain gang! We were there early enough that I was asked to volunteer to help. It was my pleasure. This was the closest I had gotten to live action since my last varsity game in 1986. Heather got some pictures of me in action, per se, but I will have to share them at a later time once we get them off her camera. Same thing for the action pictures of Dylan. I could have taken pictures while on the sideline, but that might not have been very professional. The Upton coach was in an uproar over the poor play of his Bears, so it would have been just flat wrong to hold the down marker in one hand and take pictures with the other while play was on.

So, I owe you Lakeshore pictures, and I still owe you Dowagiac pictures too! I have not forgotten. It’s just been busy.

----------

As odd as this sounds, I got to stand by the railroad tracks and experience a nighttime train tonight . . . not once but twice. If you stand close to the tracks, and focus on the light coming at you, you nearly fall over once the train passes by . . . it’s a really neat feeling. The first time was about 8:30 PM, and the AMTRAK flew by at full speed. The next time was after the revival meeting, and I was out with our Encounter guests to see a freight train go by. Trains are cool at night at close range.
