06/26/2007: "The Joy of Gardening"
listening to: Miami Ink on TLC
One of the many things I enjoy about summer is the gardening I get to do. I spent some time tonight watering flowers, rearranging tomato plant vines, and setting up the garden for the sprinkler treatment. It’s much cooler in the evening once the sun has dipped down below the neighbor’s house, and I get to run around outside with a green water hose.
The garden is not weed free. I try to keep up with the random growths, but cannot always. For some reason, I don’t mind going out to attack weedy areas. It’s not overgrown out there; it’s just not completely clean. It’s OK. One cannot tell from the road that my garden has weeds, so let’s just keep them a secret between you and me.
I grew up in rural Indiana, and was surrounded on three sides by cornfields, and had cattle staring at me from the fourth side. I am used to peace and quiet and wide-open spaces. When I was a kid, I would spend hours outside roaming around the area just listening and looking. Where we live here in St. Joseph is a tad bit reminiscent of where I grew up. The space is smaller, the road is busier, and I can hit my neighbor’s house with one throw. However, it’s not crowded, and there is a peaceful field behind our house. No honking horns, no loud music, no congestion. As I water the plants and look at the garden I can take myself back home.
