03/21/2007: "A Boilermaker in Georgia Tech's Court"
Purdue 76, Georgia Tech 63 - Wire Services - Basketball - MSNBC.com
Gearlds led second-seeded Purdue with 26 points in a 76-63 win over seventh-seeded Georgia Tech in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament on Monday night.
I turned on the television late Monday night, and literally caught the last thirty seconds of this game. Purdue has had a strong women’s program these past twenty years, more so than the men’s program.
But that’s not the point of this entry.
I had previously told you about Sharon Versyp’s return to Purdue University’s women’s basketball program, this time as the head coach. As I watching the game, the cameras panned on the Georgia Tech head coach, MaChelle Joseph. Her name sounded very familiar, and her face looked even more familiar. Sure enough, she is the same woman who came to Purdue in 1988 to play basketball, and is Purdue’s all-time leading scorer. I saw her play a few games, just like I saw two or three of Sharon’s games as well. I cannot remember if I have any pictures of her, but I will have to look. I still owe you pictures of Sharon.
So, another Boilermaker does well in the world, and yet another one from my own era as well.
