03/10/2007: "The Bible in Georgia Public Schools"
Georgia to OK Bible-based lit classes - Education - MSNBC.com
Georgia is poised to introduce two literature classes on the Bible in public schools next year, a move some critics say would make the state the first to take an explicit stance endorsing -- and funding -- biblical teachings.
I had mentioned this once before. It looks like optional Bible classes in Georgia public schools are becoming reality.
Again, I support the notion that the classes should be optional. Shoving the Bible -- and inevitably christianity itself -- down the throats of students will ultimately do create more problems than it solves. We are to bring the Gospel to the entire world, but only through love.
I also worry about the doctrine that will taught. Baptists may not be able to make Presbyterians happy, and Lutherans probably won't make Penecostals happy. On and on. It's hard to teach the Bible without some sort of preset notion of your doctrine creeping in. I think even athiests teaching the Bible would show some prejudice on issues.
However, getting students to read the Bible is an excellent goal. Just getting them in the Word will get them thinking about God's Word, and the rest from there is out of our hands.
As with sex education, there is no substitute for loving parents who teach Biblical doctrine and lessons. If Christian parents in Georgia are allowing the public schools alone to teach their kids the Bible, I frankly feel they are failing in their mission as parents!
