02/10/2007: "The Conflict Between Science and Faith"
Are those godless secularists trying to take on the trappings of religion? Not at all, says Robert Stephens, one of the organizers behind Darwin Day. "We're not trying to make a saint out of Darwin," he said. "We're just using him as a symbol." Stephens and his colleagues say this long holiday weekend is as good a time as any to turn science into a cause for celebration.
I truly believe that science and faith can co-exist. After all, we believe that God created the science itself. Therefore there has to be a hand-in-hand relationship. However, because we have an incomplete understanding of both science and God, the pieces of the puzzle just don't quite fit together.
I enjoy science, and believe it has applications in our life. If someone came to me today and said that they would fund my scientific education from scratch to PhD, what would I study? I might have a hard time making a choice! Would I want to reach out to the stars and study astronomy? Would it be fun to sail the seas in search of secrets as a marine biologist? Could I teach theoretical physics at a major research university?
I do not believe that we are called to be ignorant. I believe that science is yet another way to expose the glory of God. By examining His complex world/sky/universe, we can be more and more in awe of how complex it is.
So, don't be worried that this is called Darwin Day. After all, as the article says, he is just a symbol. Even Christians can learn from him. Embrace the sciences.
